Looking for a new car? Check out these 2016 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ Winners

When you’re in the market for a new car, there are generally a few must-haves on your list. Whether those include leather seats or an impressive engine, it goes without saying that safety is usually at the top. Well, you’re in luck, because this year’s IIHS rankings are out – and we’re here to tell you a little about the chart-topping contenders.

Midsize and Moderately Priced: 2016 Honda Accord

It was a great year for Honda with five of its six award-winning models receiving TOP SAFETY PICK+ recognition. Among them is the 2016 Honda Accord 4 door sedan with optional front crash prevention. Ranging from around $22,000.00 to $35,000.00, the redesigned Accord comes in several customizable styles. Ready for the dirt? See for yourself.

Pros: The Accord boasts a spacious, high-quality interior with no shortage of safety features. (The optional Honda Sensing package includes Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking System, and Lane Departure Warning.) With its new alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, smooth ride and handling, and quiet cabin, drivers will appreciate this sleekly aerodynamic model. Throw in its versatility – choose from sedan or coupe, 4- or 6-cylinder engine, and manual or automatic transmission – and it’s easy to see why Honda remains one of the top players in the industry.

Cons: Cramming so much technology into such a tight space can pose a problem – at least for the eye. The dual display screens aren’t for everyone and many a critic has commented that the touchscreen system isn’t as user-friendly as it could be. Especially since the infotainment system, while providing access to different apps, prevents anyone (even passengers) from entering a destination into the navigation system while the car is moving.

Small SUVS: 2016 Mazda CX-5

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 was one of only seven TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicles in its category. It comes in three different styles (Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring) and ranges from approximately $22,000.00 to $30,000.00. Check out what drivers love about this car and what they could live without.

Pros: Although it comes in a small package, it’s generally agreed that the inside is comfortable and roomy. This car is loaded with features from keyless/remote engine start and back-up cameras to fog lamps and HD and Satellite radio. This car is also known for its nice handling and great fuel economy.

Cons: The stereo system’s sound quality appears to be lacking and the base engine doesn’t have the acceleration or power needed to boast a truly exceptional driving experience. Plus, some believe the car’s infotainment system proves difficult to navigate in the car.

Midsize Luxury SUVs: 2016 Lexus RX

The 2016 Lexus RX is the only vehicle on this year’s IIHS list to receive the highest ratings across the board, including ease of use for child seat anchors. Ranging from around $42,000.00 to $56,000.00, this luxury SUV comes in four different styles. Love it or leave it? Here are some things to consider.

Pros: The interior is elegant, made with quality materials, and boasts plenty of leg room. Drivers tend to agree that it handles well and the cabin is surprisingly quiet. With features like: intuitive parking assist; lane keep assist and lane departure alert with steering assist; and back-up camera with dynamic gridlines, this car is nothing if not helpful.

Cons: Complaints include a somewhat uncooperative infotainment system and a less than ideal get-up-and-go factor when it comes to acceleration.
