spark plugs

How often should your spark plugs be replaced?

Some of the more important discoveries started with a spark. Fire. Electricity. Automobiles. Yes, the spark of electricity the plug emits across that small gap, is what ignites combustion and is one of the more important elements in your car’s engine. The fact is, spark plugs are an important part of your car’s overall “health.” Without them, not only will your car simply not start, bad plugs can potentially affect your entire engine’s performance. Poor fuel economy, misfires, lack of power…all can result from worn or faulty spark plugs.

So what are the signs that it’s time to change your spark plugs?

• Poor fuel economy – When your engine doesn’t get the right spark at the right time, it can lead to fuel being wasted. If your fuel seems to be depleting more rapidly than usual, check your car’s spark plugs.
• Misfires, starting problems – If your car is starting erratically and feels like it is sputtering, or maybe having trouble starting at all – your spark plugs may not be functioning well.
• Knocking or rattling noises from your engine – This can be an indicator that your spark plugs are misfiring.
• Performance issues – If accelerating seems strained and your engine feels sluggish, spark plugs could be the reason.

The good news is changing your car’s spark plugs regularly doesn’t typically cost a fortune and will keep your engine running smoothly. Most auto manufacturers suggest having new spark plugs installed about every 30,000 miles; however, spark plug longevity depends on the condition and type of spark plug. Copper plugs have the shortest life, while plugs made of more advanced and durable materials can provide up to four times the life of a copper spark plug.
