This is a great time to be looking for a job as an auto technician. With inflation high and supply low, fewer people are buying new cars, which means they are trying to get as much mileage out of their old vehicles as possible. Demand for auto technicians is high, and if you have the following skills, you’re more likely to get hired in this rewarding field.

Diagnostic and Mechanical Skills

First and foremost, employers are looking for auto technicians who can not only quickly diagnose what is wrong with a vehicle, but also has the mechanical skills to fix the problem. Job candidates should understand how to effectively use high-tech diagnostic tools but also know how to repair a wide range of issues. It’s important to be trained in electrical, HVAC, engine performance, suspension, steering, brake systems, and transmission diagnosis and repair.

Adaptability

The automotive industry is constantly evolving, with new technologies being introduced all the time. Think of self-driving cars or those that can automatically parallel park. Automotive technicians/ mechanics must be willing to keep learning and adapting to changes so they can take on any new challenge that comes their way.

When you talk to customers, you’ll be representing your shop or dealership, so it’s important to have a good personality, be honest and respectful, and always act professionally. Employers value professionalism, so when you are interviewing, be sure to dress in appropriate attire, bring a printed resume, and put your best foot forward.
